Putah Creek Council’s June CreekSpeak Presentation:
Putah Creek Habitat Enhnacement – Rich Marovich, Putah Creek Streamkeeper
Thursday, June 4th @ 7 PM, Winters Library, 708 Railroad Avenue
Putah Creek has seen many changes since humans first settled its banks. Over the last few years, several large projects in downtown Winters have worked to undo some of the damages done to the creek and improve habitat. In this talk, at 7 PM at the Winters Community Library, 708 Railroad Avenue, we will learn about the continuing Winters Putah Creek Park Channel Realignment work planned for this summer. This fourth phase will realign the channel in an area formerly used for sewage aeration ponds and will complete the conversion from industrial use (waste water treatment) to River Parkway. This work will provide a continuous floodplain that will enhance the wildlife migration corridor and improve access for people of all ages.
Rich Marovich has been the Putah Creek Streamkeeper since 2000. He coordinates with private and public landowners, funding sources, expert advisors and contractors to enhance the resources of Putah Creek.
CreekSpeak talks are free to Putah Creek Council members and open to the public. A $5 donation is requested from those who have not yet joined the Council.
For more information: http://www.putahcreekcouncil.org/creekspeak-begin-may-28
Additional talks in 2015 will include:
• Archaeology and Prehistoric Ecology of Putah Creek, Adie Whitaker (July 2)
• Impacts of the Monticello Fire on Bobcat Ranch, Carissa Koopmann (August 6)
• Oaks and Wildlife: Nature’s High Density Housing, John McNerney (September 3)

All,

Cinco de Mayo is also the Big Day of Giving (“Big DOG”)and your chance to help support some incredible Winters organizations. The Big DOG is a 24 hour fundraising period where organization not only collect funds to support their groups, but also have a chance to have some of those funds matched through enhancements.

Big Dog is easy to do! Starting at midnight tonight, log on to www.bigdayofgiving.org and search for an organization to donate to. Starting at midnight tonight, you can make your donation and watch how the organization is doing throughout tomorrow on a “leaderboard”. The earlier your donation, the better, because organizations are eligible for matching funds during specific times.

In Winters, we have five (5) organizations participating. These include:

1. Winters Friends of the Library
2. Winters Healthcare Foundation
3. Putah Creek Council
4. Winters Theatre Company
5. Center for Land Based Learning

Each of these organizations helps in making “Winters be Winters”. They are play an integral role in our little town, with a huge percentage of what you donate going straight into the community. Here is a little about each organization.

• Winters Healthcare Foundation was founded on the premise of bringing care to their patients in a healthcare world which is huge, sometimes faceless and bureaucratic. They provide quality healthcare to all segments of the community regardless of the ability to pay. From wellness and nutrition to family and elder care, WHF is one of the signature organization in Winters.
• The Winters Friends of the Library has been the premier community organization in support of literacy and education as they support our community library. Last year, they raised and donated almost $25,000 toward services, furniture and programming at the Library. Enough cannot be said for how important they are to supporting a wide array of programs for children, students, adults and seniors.
• Winters Theatre Company not only entertains us, but they serve as an integral part of opportunity for community members and young people to express themselves. WTC has been a huge supporter of the community center during tough times.
• The Putah Creek Council has been our environmental leader in Winters for almost 25 years and they need our help to keep going strong. Their stewardship of the creek, community education and advocacy for improving the ecology in and around us has been incredible. This winter, salmon spawned in the creek and we can thank the Putah Creek Council for that happening.
• The Center for Land Based Learning has put Winters on the national and world maps. Their focus on connecting people to the land where our food is grown has helped change the way we view how we eat and the importance of stewardship. They genuinely change people’s lives through education and programs held right here in Winters!
